For anyone setting out to earn a living from
the written word it helps to have plenty of experiences to draw
upon. This is true quite irrespective of whether applied for technical
purposes or if you are more inclined to follow journalistic or creative
avenues of thought.
All things considered, I think I qualify: for
a start, having been an expatriate for most of my life, over the
years I have lived, been educated, and worked in a number of countries
including the UK, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, Denmark and France.
This rather eclectic background has led me
to more than just a variety of different locations – it’s
also encouraged me to explore many different aspects of life. From
completing a Chemistry degree at Imperial College to being shut
off from civilisation in northernmost Sweden for fifteen months
(national military service), to working in vineyards in Champagne
I’ve constantly been inspired by a profound curiosity of the
world around me.
Developing and focusing that inquisitive nature,
allowing me to explore the creative, abstract side of my abilities
in everything from writing short fictional pieces for the web to
producing well-researched feature articles, has become a prerogative
for me.
Beyond the intellectual aspects of it all though,
I have also gained valuable experience in people-handling, project
organisation and editorial practice.
I am open to seizing any opportunity to put
these skills to good use in what I hope will be a creative and intellectually
stimulating future – preferably remaining here in lovely Cornwall!
